6 week old puppy, what extra things does he need being so young?

I realize this is young, but the living situation the dog was in was not good the mother was already sold, so when I got him he had not been with the mother for a couple days already, the conditions were really bad So we took him home.I am ready to give him the best home possible, its been really hard so far,but I know he is just a baby,I am trying to do everything right. I learn everyday. question is, since he is only 6 weeks, what other things can I do for him that would make him more comfortable. At night he sleeps right next to our bed in a basket wtih a quilt, and his baby blanket his favorite chew toy and little stuffed animal. Is there anything else he should sleep with?Someone said a clock that ticks but no alarm because it sounds like the mothers heart!During the day he is kept in his room in a LARGE cage,he has an old comforter in there his blanket toys and water we both work 8 hr shifts but I get home for lunch, we spend all evening together %26 fridays i work 6 hours not 8

6 weeks isnt too young i gotten my american pitbull at this age. They are just weened from their mom at this age. I would take him to the vet to make sure he doesnt have worms, since the enviroment was so bad.Especially if he was on the ground. At this age they need to be fed like 3 through 4 times a day, his teeth are not all in so probably wet food would best. also at this age they learn alot from their surroundings. Crate training is great this helps with potty training. I would put a seporater in the cage enough room to laydown and turn around, they will not go where they sleep. If they have too much room he could do his bussiness in his crate. Before you go to work walk and play with him. I would have someone come over to let him out and feed him at this age their blatters arent that big to hold it in that long.I put a radio on when i leave so he doesnt feel left alone. Seems like you are doing the best you can. Good luck!!
Sounds like you are doing a great job, but to potty train him you are going to need a smaller crate.
Also, once he has his immunizations, socialize him really well with other dogs. Once the mom weans the pups, she continues to teach him social behavior. Other dogs will help in this process since mom didn't get the chance, just make sure they are friendly and patient dogs before you put the pup down to play with them.
Socialize him with a lot of people as well. Expose him to as many people and situations as you can. The earlier you start and the more he sees the better it is.
The one thing I needed to get some sleep was one of those old fashion style clocks that make a loud ticking sound...You wrap it up in a blanket and put it in their bed. It will simulate a heart beat and give them more solid and longer sleep.
glad u took him out of that bad enviroment. he doesn't deserve that. it sound's like your doing a great job, main thing is give him alot of love. good luck.
The heartbeat idea is good, but what you can do is go to the store and look in the baby section, they have a few items there that imitate a heartbeat that would be useful (and maybe more ''cuddly'' than a clock).
You're doing the best you can. I don't know if I would use a "LARGE" cage. A pup will feel more secure if in a small confined area. Instinct is when their mother is away to hide from potential predators. Large area will also confuse the pup when you start housebreaking. Other than that it sounds like you are doing well. Have you taken the pup to the vet yet? It needs worming and shots along with a check up. The conditions you describe could have caused unseen illness. Good Luck and Keep up the good work.
