A neuter dog?

Hi I have a westie..6 month old who was receintly neutered.(going on 3 weeks now).and honestly the only difference is he has stopped humping his bed.
I thought neutering was suppost to make a dog less aggressive..it was suppost to make the dog more docile..less likely to pee on the walls etc.
yet there is no real visable evidence of change..he still rips things to shreds..pees..does the "alpha dog" routine...
so what is the real scoop on neutering? does it really affect most male dogs?
they make it out to be a situation where the dog who is neutered is now lazy and 300lbs
Answers:
All puppies, neutered or not, are going to have lots of energy. Also, the hormones may not have completely left his system yet. The breed is also a factor. Terriers tend to be little balls of energy. It is going to take time and training for him to calm down. Neutering does help but it's just part of the solution.
dogs dont start marking territory until they are at least 8-9 months old. are you sure he is marking, not just having to go?? and hes still a puppy, so if he is aggressive than you will need to work with him on his behavioral issues. the neutering does cut down on aggression, but normally dogs dont show that much aggression until they are 8-9 months old and hitting maturity...
and dogs who are lazy is because there owners, and they are 300lbs because they eat to much. neutering a dog dose not make it fat or lazy. all of my dogs have been fixed, but they are still healthy and active..
the only thing i can thnik of is call a dog whisperer you know like the ppl who make ur dog(s) act better.
Well, part of your issue is age. He is just a puppy and all the things he is doing are normal puppy behavior. Some of your issue may be training. An untrained dog will have behavior problems regardless of if it is neutered or not.
Another thing to think about is that at 6 months his adult hormones have not taken over yet. Basically by having him neutered young, you prevented any hormone related behavior problems from starting in the first place. So without any training, you will most likely not see any major behavior change.
Neutering is only one part of the bigger picture. Training and positive reinforcement is the other.
the affects of neutering can take up to two months to be complete. My dog still marked quite a bit right after his neuter- two months later he barely does it. He does still rip things to shred- that's called 'being a young dog'. The alpha dog thing just needs some training.
First of all it can take a while for all of the testosterone to fully get out of his system. Some of what he is doing has become a behavior rather than instinct and over time with less hormones will lesson.
But keep in mind he is a puppy in his adolescent stage (think like around a 12 year old boy). He is testing his limits, finding your boundries, going through normal puppy development. So of these things will change as he matures and gets older.
Neutering is proven to lesson marking behaviors, humping, aggression etc. But it does take time and age to fully see the effects. Your pup is still learning, growing, exploring. He may never grow out of some things (like riping toys to shreds, my 6 year old lab still does that), but other behaviors will fade or change over time.
It is your responsibility however to show him what is appropriate and what is not. Reward him for calm non-alpha type behavior and be patient as he grows.
Sometimes it takes awhile for the neutering to kick in, so be patient. You have a 'terror' and they are very feisty dogs. He's still a baby, he'll slow down as he gets older. I had a Yorkie (another 'terror') and you could be describing him, but he did slow down when he was about two. I remember watching DW on TV and he was dealing with a westie that would shred the mail as it was dropped in the slot. I am going to wish you good luck and hope for the best for you, I just wanted to tell you to be patient with the neutering
You should have had your dog neutered about 4mns old if you knew your dog had these behavior problems.now that your dog is still doing these behaviors after having been neutered, it tells me these are learned behaviors...People really do depend on the neutering too much to take away behavior issues...and yes they can take them away but it is never a guarantee and if someone told u it would, they are not educated enough in this area.what i would suggest is some in home training, but make sure u have a certified trainer come out, not just some idiot who claims they are a dog trainer, bc anyone can say they are a trainer! I wish u the best of luck with your pup!
