Adopting a dog?

i was on petfinder.com looking for a dog to adopt in my area earlier today and i noticed in most of my local shelters the adoption fee is $400-500 even for older dogs or mixed breed dogs and dogs that were healthy when they came to the shelter.
i came across an adult yorkie who i was interested in adopting and who is for adoption(wasnt a yorkie rescue but just a local shelter) he was already neutured (from his previous owners vet )and is healthy and only been there a couple of days. but the adoption fee is still $500
why charge so much? i feel some more dogs would be adopted to good homes if the fee wasnt as expensive . your oopinions?
Answers:
The reason may be that they do not have enough funding. I know that our shelter charges a lot more for the healthy dogs because we have 20+ dogs who are old and sick that we have been unable to find homes for. The vet bill can mount up. We use the high fees we get on the healthy dogs to pay these bills.
And while it is possible that a lot more dogs would be adopted into good homes if the fees were lower, it's also possible that a lot more dogs would be adopted into bad homes. I'd suggest talking to the shelter and asking what drives this policy. Chances are - it has the best interests of the dogs at heart. Ask if the fee is negotiable provided that you allow them to do a home visit before approving the adoption. Also, try volunteering as a dog walker/socializer. Our shelter is much more likely to reduce our adoption fee on an animal if we know the person is good with our animals and cares enough to give their time.
BTW - what area do you live in?
do you have some links? Ive never seen a shelter charge more than 100 dollars unless it was a severe abuse case and the animal needed a lot of rehabilitation
also puppies will also cost quite a bit more
I wish it wasnt so much. For us it was 100 dollars, which is considerably less. She wasnt spayed yet, so that covered right there, along with her shots. She was 10 wks when we adopted her.
The way i see it though is if you have the money to adopt a pet at 100+ from a shelter it shows that you have some level of maturity, and that you can provide a reasonablly healthy life for the animal, ie quality food, vet service, ect..
Well ,my dog was $450 so I don't think so. If it is a purebred then NO!! but mixed aliitle. My mixed breed was $100.00
i dont know where you live but i know the county shelter where i live isnt that much i think it was more to get the dog we have now becuse we took the dog we had before back to the vet becuse she tried to kill the dog we already had
Well, shelters need to get there money somewhere.
Think about all the things they do for all those animals, vaccinate, spay and neuter, toys, beds, and not to mention the care they give to animals who are injured or pregnant. That stuff costs money you know!
And yes it may not have been that dog that needed all that, but what about a dog who had a broken leg in the shelter before her? Surgery costs at least $1,000, and I don't think they'll ever put an adoption fee of $1,000 on a dog, they need to spread out the price a little, you know?
When I adopted my cat it was only $50. I understand the need to charge a fee because it cost alot of money to feed and take care of the animals and keep the shelter open , which I am all for(especially no kill shelters), but I think $500 is a bit pricy and I think it should be the same cost for all dogs. Its not like they had to buy the animals so why should you have to pay more for a particular dog. I think if they want to place more animals in loving homes, they need to reduce the price to about $100.
Animal rescues tends to charge $400 - 500. Try your city or county's animal control centers. In LA County, I think it is about $40. But you may not necessarily find pure breeds or the age you are looking for (if you want a specific type or kind).
I've found it really depends on where you are located as to how much the adoption fees for dogs are. If it's a purebred the price is usually more (depending on the shelter). I used to live in the middle of nowhere in KY, I adopted both my dogs when I was there for very very very cheap (under $70) and both are purebred (ones an english bulldog- young no serious health issues-hard to find in shelters to begin with, and the other is a purebred Komondor- rare breed to begin with, especially in shelters)) I have since moved back to western NY and the price to adopt an older mutt is close to $200. I know it also depends on how the shelter is run. If it's a private run place or non-profit then ALL their income comes from adoptions and fundraisers, and not all of them have vets that will work for extremly cheap so it costs them the $100-200 to have a dog fixed when it comes in and all its shots. Places that get government money can afford to relax the adoption fees a little because of the supplemental income.
In my area purebreds without health problems are between 200 and 300 dollars.
Your area cost of living is higher then mine.
They charge more for full breed dogs to make money to house and feed, and fixed, and medicine for other dogs
Where I like you can adpoted a mutt or a dog with health problems for under 100 dollars
They chagre so much, because to get a health purebreed dog would be double or triple or more the price
Well it all depends the amount of vet care and testing they put into their animals. Not all of the dogs are in shelters many are in rescues. Shelters often euthanize animals who need surgeries- so they don't lose as much money. Shelters who save them will need more money from somewhere. My local shelter give you a dog with no health testing, temperament testing, no shots, and no preventatives. They charge $75 (with neuter only). Then I had to go to the vet and spend $140 on shots, tests, and preventatives. So now the price of my dog is up to $215. If you got a puppy for free from someone you'd still end up with an easy $500 in shots, preventatives, and neuter in several months.
They charge the price they need to- they don't make profit- end of story.
The fee is designed to weed out people who want dogs for the wrong reasons. The thought is that if you have the money to pay the adoption fee, you will have money to care for the dog if it has any medical emergencies.
YOU CAN BE HAPPY IF YOU SUCEED IN YOUR WORK
YOU CAN BE HAPPY IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY%26CHILDREN
YOU CAN BE HAPPY IF YOU GAIN MORE MONEY
SO THE DEFINATION OF THE HAPPNIESS IS RELATIVE.
