I hope this Shih Tzu is 3 years and not 3 months. Twice a day for an adult dog is wonderful. Just cut what you would feed in a one a day meal in half. Are you using Pedigree Small Breed dry mixed with Pedigree pouches or exactly what are you feeding? I can't begin to imagine a Shih Tzu eating over a quart of food a day. I believe there are instructions on the bag that are overly generous and do not include "the squishy food". My Miniature Poodle did not eat that much a day and he was 24 lbs. .
thats the right amount
if hes 3, then id feed him like 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food twice a day
Look at the package of food. Bags of dog food will say on the back what amount you should feed your dog per day. The freqency is up to you. If you already have a schedule set up with your dog, it's best not to change it too much.
The softer food can be used as a treat, or you can subtract a small amount of kibble from his diet if you mix the pedigree in with his food.
A quart of food? For a 9 lb. dog? Are you crazy?
He should be getting about 3 - 4 % of his body weight per day only. That is between 4 and 6 OUNCES of food.
I doubt I could eat a quart of food in a day.
I think you must be joking. If you are not, it isn't really very funny.
well, a quart sounds like way too much. Twice a day is about right for a smaller dog..read the package for amounts...and look at your dog...if he's healthy looking it's probably about right...if he's fat cut down.
The number of times you feed your dog largely depends on your schedule. Most commonly dogs will develop a schedule when they know it's time to eat. I have read that it is best to feed twice a day. AM and PM. As far as the amount you feed is a judgment call, a mix of dry and soft food is best.. If you are saying that you feed the dog 1 quart at every feeding that sounds a bit much. Check with your vet for they're estimate on the amount to feed. You can also look at books at Petsmart or your local library. There is also "dogs for dummies" that is more breed specific.
Try feeding an adult shih tzu 3/4 cup to 1 cup of dry kibble "twice" per day. This would mean a morning meal and an evening meal. And add about two tablespoons of wet food to each meal.
