Adding a 2nd dog - and how about a rescue dog?

Looking for some input! We just moved into a bigger home with a nice fenced in yard. We are thinking about getting another lab, as we love dogs and we think our lab (who's 3 years old) will love having a buddy. How is it going from one dog to two? Also, we had gotten our dog from a breeder but we're thinking of getting a rescue lab. Anyone adopt a rescue before? How did that work out for you? (Sorry I know, two questions in one!)
Answers:
A good friend of mine has a rescued lab. She loves her! First, she adopted a lab and brought her home, but the lab didn't get along with my friend's two greyhounds. So the resuce was really nice and took the dog back and helped her find another dog that would get along with others. She's so happy with her new dog! Hers is 4. I would recommend adopting one similar in age to yours. Then they'll be even on energy, hopefully. Look on petfinder.com; there are lots of labs for adoption.
It should work out just fine as long as your dog likes other dogs, has good obedience training and you choose another dog that is social with other dogs. Try and get them to meet before you adopt. I'd suggest getting a dog that is the opposite sex (with both being spayed and neutered). Male/female combos work the best. Obedience training and housetraining in the first dog is important because the new dog often follows the lead of the old dog to learn the ropes and you want it to learn the right things.
ya that sould be fine. my black lab loves her "sibs". and it is one of the ways to keep them in good shape when they get old.
GOOD FOR YOU! Rescue . . .
It is your best bet for several reason. You already have one dog, when you rescue you will have to have your current dog meet the new one. Basically you can let your dog now pick his buddy.
A rescue is going to be able to tell you so much information about the dogs they have up for adoption.
You got a new house, nice new rugs and stuff? Why ruin it with pee from potty training a puppy. Many rescue dogs will come already potty trained
The rescue can give you SO much information about owning two dogs.
I own three dogs. I have always had two or more dogs. I think it is healthier for the dog and for me. They exercise each other a lot. They keep each other company when I am gone. They have someone that "understands" them.
Go for the second dog and go to a rescue. Choose carefully and it will be a very good experience.
Oh please please please adopt a rescue dog!! They are wonderful. It is sooooooooo worth it.
I have 4 rescues, all from different forms of rescue though. I always think if you have another dog and children going thru a breed rescue is a good idea as they often can offer the most info on the dog and help you find the best fit. Rescue dogs are usually living in foster homes that are already working on breaking bad habits and have a good idea of the dogs personality. I say go for it! If you find the right fit you shouldnt have too many problems having 2 dogs as opposed to 1. Sometimes they even help each other burn off some energy and keep each other company creating a calmer household. I would get a a good book on living with a pack to ensure you introduce them properly and dont do anything to create jealousy. Good Luck!
