Any ideas on how to cure diarria for my minature schnauzer?

This past Saturday,my dog was sick with vomiting and diarria, plus he mainly layed around all day. Then on Sunday he was back to normal, but still had the diarria. Then on Monday still doing good, but still having the diarria. When all this first started it was like water, now it isn't that way but it's still considered diarria.
He is still very playful, eating and drinking great,,and he is also up to date on all his shots.

Hi there I am a Veterinarian Technician and hope to help!!
I am sorry to hear about your sick pup! Unfortunately, at one time or another every dog will have diarrhea.
What I would recommend is to collect a same of the diarrhea and bring it into your Vet tomorrow for a fecal exam for parasites AND a Giardia snap-test. This should cost you about $25 and only takes about 20 minutes (a "normal" solid fecal takes 10 minutes, any loose stool should be run for 20).
That way you can rule out any intestinal parasites or Giardia. Most likely even if your dog does not have any parasites your Vet will prescribe Metronidazole which will help to get rid of the diarrhea.
In the mean time I would advise you to fast your dog for a full 24 hours. Your dog needs a full 24 hours of no food to rid the body of the diarrhea. No food, no bones, no treats, no toys from which pieces can be swallowed. HOWEVER, offer plenty of cold water (frequently!) to keep your dog hydrated.
Once you have fasted your dog for the full 24 hours then you should feed a bland diet. You can either purchase i/d prescription food from your Vet, or (if you don't mind cooking!) you can boil either chicken and rice or hamberg and rice. It is very important that you rinse off all the fat before boiling and please do not add seasoning or anything extra (that will cause diarrhea! you want to keep it as "bland" as possible! Trust me, I have seen everything!).
You are going to feed small frequent meals of the bland diet. About 1/3 of a cup 6 times daily. Again, make sure your baby is drinking plenty of water. I still would limit any bones (especially rawhides or anything similar) so you give your dogs stomach a little rest.
Feed the bland diet until your dog has a solid stool (if you are feeding the bland diet while giving your dog Metronidazole- do not expect any bowel movements for 3-7 days! So, don't panic if your dog does not poop for several days. That is to be expected on the prescription.). IF you are still seeing diarrhea on the bland diet then it is even more important to bring a fecal sample into the Vet (if you haven't done so already).
Here are some questions your Vet is going to want to know:
1) When did the diarrhea start?
2) Did you change anything in his/her diet? ie- new food, new bone, new treats, etc.
3) Did he/she get into something he/she should not have?
4) On heartworm prevention year round?
5) Any vomiting?
6) Eating/drinking/acting like normal?
7) And of course they are going to want to see the fecal sample!
Hope this helps!! Let me know how he is doing and if I can help you more.
If the diarrhea keeps up, I would have him checked by the vet. The fact that he had vomitting and was lethargic points to something, it could have just been an intestinal bug, but it could also be something worse. The fact that he's had diarrhea for several days now would cause me enough concern to take my dog to the vet.
Take him to his vet, be sure to bring a stool sample. Diarrhea can be a serious issue.
If the cause of the GI upset is from worms, the vet will prescribe a dewormer. The vet will likely also prescribe flagyl. Finding the cause is key for the cure to this bout.
Just checking with the Vet would be your best bet. Are you feeding him human food? Be careful, my dog has trouble with certain human foods. Try to feed her some natural dog food.
Good luck!
It's good to check with the Vet about the cause of the chronic diarrhea. Your dog could have a parisite like Giardia or something like that which requires some special medicines and treatment for some time. Of course it could be something else, but in the meantime, some things that can help your dogs immediate situation:
Go to the grocery store and get:
1. Pumpkin Pie Filling- usually in the baking section of grocery stores. This comes in cans and is just plain pureed pumpkin. It is a natural and a great binder for dogs when it comes to diarrhea, but depending on the cause, it is not a cure for some conditions causing diarrhea. Got this tip from my Vet and it works better than any medicines I ever got for my dogs and without negative side effects.
2. Pedialyte- for babies and children. Has electrolytes that need to be replaced when a puppy has had diarrhea and /or vomiting. Your dog could use some of that. Just add it to water, half and half or offer some straight to your dog (like water)
It could be the dog food you're feeding him. Sometimes canned dog food will cause diahrea. Try a different brand even if it's dry food you're giving him now. It solved the problem with one of my dogs.
If your pet hasn't been wormed within the last two weeks, then reworm it.and take away all food and water.Replace the water with the baby non-flavored pediolyte and boil some chcken and cut into small pieces, add small amount of water and puree it in a blender. Most pets will eat this when nothing else. You may also give your pet some Pepto Bismol, about 1/4 teaspoon every 4 hours as needed for diarrhea. If this doesn't help see your vet.
And the vet said ? He should have said ' Let's find out why he is having diarrhea, then we will treat that.. then the diarrhea will go away ' Treat the problem, not the symptoms.
dont waste money going into the vet but just call your vet or like petsmart and ask them what food they would suggest.
Dogs get diarrea from what they eat so they may suggest some extra fiber food or something like that.
I would make an appointment ASAP or see if your Vet has walk-in times. Even though your dog has all of it's vaccinations, it could still be Parvo. It could also be worms, coccidia or giardia. You don't know unless you see a vet. Diarrhea causes dehydration and dehydration can eventually kill your pet. I wouldn't take any chances!
deffantly have him checked by the vet but when that happened to my colliewe changed his food from iams to purina 1.
our doctor told us to give them white rice to help their stomach.
