Any advice for adopting a Pit Bull?

i would like to adopt a pit bull puppy, but should i find a breeder or get one from the local adds in the newspaper?
Answers:
Get one from a rescue shelter! Pit bulls are one of the most common breeds to be at shelters. They are great dogs but people think the dog is bad because a lot of owners make a bad name for them.
Go for shelters first please %26 do tons of research so you can make your dog a model pit bull so you can educate people that they are really great dogs!
How about a animal shelter or the breeder because you can get more info on the dog and the parents and if something happens you can always go back to the breeder .
A reputable breeder is best but one has to ask lots of questions and check OFA stats and references to know if they are reputable. Sometimes a rescue is better, the dogs live in houses and they know their quirks.
go to your local animal shelter and adopt one. These ads are all about making the money and the don't care who buys one, at least at a shelter, you'll be getting a dog you know is healthy, and is well cared for, besides they need good homes. If you never had a Pit Bull, you may want to learn as much about them as possible. They are very strong dogs and have A LOT of energy to burn. I should know, I have 2 of them.
Go through a rescue or a breeder. If you go through an add research the person you're getting him from. The best info I can give you is to research the breed. Pits are not dogs for novice dog owners. They are wonderful dogs but need a lot of socialization and positive training. Also be aware of the stereotypes, a lot of people are scared of the name without even meeting the dog.
Research your breeder or check out a rescue, research the breed and a good puppy obediance and have fun!! these big babies are so worth the work they require.
i agree completely that its better to rescue a dog from a shelter but a lot of pit bulls are not properly socialized, or worse yet, abused, and will require special attention/training. Dont get in over your head.
The first thing you have to do is do LOTS of research on pit bulls, decide if you want an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, or Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Make sure you read about how to raise a well rounded pit bull to be friendly to everyone, and have good manners in all situations. You can do research online, and you will want to buy a good book about pit bulls.
I adopted my pit bull from the pound when she was 1 year old. I always wanted a pit bull, and there are SO many in animal shelters, I knew I wanted to rescue one. I ended up looking for the PERFECT one for about 8 months until I found my girl. She caught my eye when I was originally walking around the shelter looking for a pit bull puppy. I didn't find any that interested me, so I started walking to the WAY back to look at the adults. There was this beautiful black and white pit bull sitting in her cage. She wasn't scared, she wasn't mad or anxious, she wasn't barking. She was just sitting, and would wag her tail if you talked to her. I took her outside to see how she would interact and play with me. She was so sweet. She just wanted love, and she would chase the ball, but wasn't overly hyper. Before I decided to adopt her I had them temperament test her with other dogs and cats. She did wonderful, so I brought her home. I couldn't have asked for a better dog, and she was definitely worth the wait.
If you plan to adopt a homeless dog you will want to find a dog or puppy who is temperament tested, and does Very well with children, dogs, cats, strangers, all situations.
If you want to buy a puppy from a breeder, DON'T get one out of the paper. DON'T buy one off the internet, and DON'T buy one from a pet store. If you want a pit bull puppy you want to get one from a reputable breeder. One who doesn't breed for intimidating looks and aggression, but one who breeds their dogs for excellent temperaments and good health. You want to meet the dog's owners, both of the dogs, and the puppies. You want to see dogs who are kept as family pets, and welcoming of all strangers. You want to see puppies who are kept in the house, and being socialized with different situations from a very early age. It might take you a long time to find a reputable breeder, and you might have to pay a little more for the perfect puppy, but trust me, it will be well worth it in the end.
This is my girl after we brought her home:

Call or go to local shelters and ask if they have any pit bulls, if they don't you can leave a request so when one comes in they will call you for it.Then do research on how to train dogs and make sure you have the time for it and the time to take care of a dog. Pits are great dogs and very loving, but very Strong headed so you need to know what you are doing when you are training this dog. Go to www.dogproblems.com for training. It's tons cheaper and aw some. It teaches you and helps you every step of the way. Pit bulls aim to please, so get a good relationship with your dog and you'll love him to pieces!
Good luck!!
go to the animal shelter. i see so many pits on the streets now. but if you want a puppy go to the newspaper and do research on them. i bought mine from a dude that lives close to my house at 7 weeks of age. its now 7 months old
