"Designer Breeds" nothing more than over priced mutts.?

I use the word "mutt" with love. But I don't understand why all the mixing of Labs with Poodles. There is nothing designer about it, they are a mix. I don't care about what generation of the mix is it is still a mutt. And if you really want to get something and call it a designer breed go to the pound or rescue one that no-one actually knows what it is and call it what every you want to. Now that would truly be a designer breed. What are some opinions on them.
Answers:
I agree, there is no way in Hell I'd pay 1,500 for a mutt. it's nuts. I got a puppy from the pound, we think she's a Black lab/German shepherd mix so I call her a German Labherd. :) Everyone is like 'what?!' So then I explain that she's a mutt... I just think the name is cool.
Ha ha oh man, the first post... wow... I feel bad for the people who fall into that trap. People are so dumb. I honestly don't feel sorry for anyone who spends that much money on a mutt... the end cost of my doggie $5 after we got money back after she was spayed and had her rabies shot. And to me, she's the best dog in the world.
totally agreed ! people spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on designer dogs that they cold find in the pound.
This ad was in my local paper selling "Designer dogs" Mutts are mutts even if their parents were both purebreds, it makes me so mad when you can adopt a cute mixed breed from the shelter.im not saying mixed dogs are worse dogs then purebreds . im just saying these dogs are from puppy mills or a very bad back yard breeder. i think all dogs deserve a good home reguardless of their breed, age , size
This was the ad:PEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US******Hi,
We have really cute DESIGNER DOGS available, these
puppies are crossed between 2 breeds to come up
with hypoallergenic benefits, healthier genetic
structure, wonderful personalities and they are
extremely cute. Mixed dogs “as experts can tell
you” are less prone to have hereditary defects as
the breeding lines are more broadly spread
and there is limited opportunity for inbreeding,
as a consequence this will save you a lot of money
on vet bills and treatments. Don’t get
confused, DESIGNER DOGS ARE NOT MUTTS (a Mutt is a
mix between 2 dogs of unknown breed/origin)
DESIGNER DOGS have a high market value; prices can
run from $600.00 to $3000.00 (Do some research to
verify this).there are lots of celebrities with designer dogs."We're thankful we we live in America where we
have freedom of choice".
I agree. People are paying thousands for what they can get in a shelter for less than $100 and bad breeders have found a new way to make a buck. Meantime, thousands of animals die in shelters every year. It's insane.
You're absolutely right.
Some devious breeders use the term "designer dog" to make their mutts sound like expensive animals.
Sadly, most designer dogs are bred by puppy mills -- and kept in deplorable conditions before they're sold at outrageous prices to ignorant buyers.
I fully agree. What America has is two problems, number one, an over abundance of greedy, irresponsible people who are more than happy to breed mutts and give them silly names if it'll make them money, and two, an abundance of total idiots who will actually PAY the money just because someone tells them it's a 'designer' dog, and are too stupid to realize Lhasapoo = Lhasa Apso + Poodle - 2 breeds + 1 dog = MUTT.
As you said, there is nothing at all wrong with mutts, they are wonderful animals. The problem is that we already have millions of them being killed every single day, and people are still cruel enough to breed more, and dumb enough to buy a dog for $2,000 that you can find at a shelter for $50.
I agree with you 100% - If you want a mutt, go to the pound. Even if you want a pure breed, if you are just keeping it as a companion, first check the pound.
*******Okay...I was trying to keep to myself, but I have to voice my opinion here. Yes, Labradoodles were first bred as service dogs for people with allergies. BUT, Standard Poodles have been used as service dogs long before the labradoodle ever came about. Why not stick with something that is already working?? Standard Poodles are excellent service dogs, they are large, sturdery, very smart, friendly, AND they don't shed...
And people often argue that you have to mix different dog breeds in order to create a new breed. BUT designer dog breeders aren't trying to create a whole new breed for any specific purpose. They are trying to create Mix Breed dogs. Example: They will breed a yorkie and a poodle to create a YorkiePoo. And that is the end of it. They aren't trying to better either breed, or create a new breed for any specific purpose, other than to create cute puppies that they can slap a high price tag on.
My opinion is that there are already way too many mixed breed dogs in this world, why are we creating more? If people want a mixed breed dog, the MOST unique mix is going to be in an animal shelter. You will find a dog that No One else has, and you can give it your own cute name...
I agree
I disagree. You mix Lab with Poodle to breed a dog that doesn't shed.
Supply and demand. if people like the look of a dog then they should get it. People are willing to take a risk on temperament. Others buy pure-breds so if someone wants to buy a designer dog--- why not?
Not everyone adopts from a shelter.
I agree on some counts.
Did you know, however, that the history of the Labradoodle was to breed service dogs for blind people who were allergic to dogs?
While I personally see no redemption in the peekapoo, puggle, and dogs of that ilk, there are some breeds out there which have been derived from a practical purpose, and should not be lumped into the category of "designer breeds" just because it is a recent development.
I agree 100% , I hate irresponsible breeders making $$$ on high priced mutts. I wouldn't pay anymore then $50 for one. Most people don't have common sense. "Designer dogs" will be around as long as people are stupid enough to pay a bundle for them.
In addition to what you have said, I am really concerned about the health problems that may be associated with these dogs. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that mixing a 150lber with a 8lber is going to cause some problems.
The whole thing is a big scam... Someone somewhere obviously came up with this idea.. Most likely had an accidental breeding.. and decided that they would pretend they did it on purpose.. People fell for their advertising scheme, and the whole thing caught on. Used to be you would be embarassed feel like a real idiot for allowing your purebred to be bred by another breed... Would quietly find them good homes and be more careful next time.. Lesson learned.. Seems like because it's the wrong thing to do, everyone wants in on it.. Jumping on the band wagon.. Just like most fads they either burn out, or people realize they've been had.. In this case again, it's the dogs that pay... Breeds that should never be bred together.. Producing very unhealthy dogs, with horrible temperament, and all sorts of problems... Then they get dumped at the shelters.. Untrained and sickly. Anyone who breeds mutts on purpose, should have to give all their profits to the local shelters, that's where the dogs end up anyhow..
I completely agree with the majority of the answers here but not with the ones that state the purpose of breeding them is for a specific reason. IE: breeding a lab with a poodle for a non shedding dog.
If you want a non shedding dog, buy a poodle. You can't guarantee that breeding a lab and a poodle will produce a non shedding dog!
I've worked in the veterinary field for a very long time and of all the labradoodles or goldendoodles or whatever doodle you want to discuss, 90% of them were simply overgrown curly coated shedding mixed breeds! Very rarely is a desirable trait a dominant one.
Selling them as a breed is completely unethical! If someone really wants a non shedding dog, like I said, buy a poodle. If they want a lab, then they don't obviously want a non shedding dog.
Why not just go to the shelter and buy a "poodle mix" ? There is completely NO difference...and this goes for all the designer breeds!
get a lab bassett mix and call it a bassador! i agree. there is no breed standard they are being bred to. there is no checks for the breeders to be upheld to. they are breeding what they wish when they wish and selling the puppies for what they want. as long as there's a designer or teacup attached to the name it's worth twice as much.
i totally agree!! people dont get it.. go to shelters and adopt!! there are tons of dogs that need a good home!
I am in total agreement with you I do not get either I was shocked when I was looking at a pet store and they told me the price of a mixed dog it is crazy
Yea.. its pathetic, selling mixed breeds for big bucks, calling them "designer dogs", "hybrids", when they're really just mutts.. and so many mutts in shelters need homes.
